Mark Gauthier: – Equinox Member, Yogi
I’m writing this note as a testimonial to the teaching skills of Melinda Abbott, whom I have known since February 2008 as a client at Equinox Fitness. During that time, I have had regular weekly or bi-weekly yoga instruction sessions with Ms. Abbott, and I can recommend her very highly as an instructor… As a teacher, she combines a solid body of knowledge with effective pedagogy and genuine personal warmth. Her instruction has been a key element in helping me achieve my personal athletic goals, and in deepening my own yoga practice. One of the most notable characteristics of Ms. Abbott’s sessions is how well organized they are. Every asana is carefully considered for its relation to the whole. Every sequence unfolds according to a logical plan. Every session builds on the last to enable students to realize their potential. I’ve often had the experience of looking back and admiring how carefully she led me through a progression over several weeks, building my skills and instilling confidence, the structure emerging clearly in retrospect. And yet, she always maintained an element of spontaneity, and openness to the unique demands of the day. For me, the result has been that each individual achievement has opened doors to the realization of new goals that once would have seemed unattainable.
I have special admiration for Ms. Abbott’s ability to communicate effectively with her students. Yoga has a language and culture that can sometimes feel strange or foreign to people without previous exposure to its traditions. Ms. Abbott has a special ability to help others grasp yoga’s potential and relevance in their own lives. In my own case, at the start of our working together, I had a simple goal: to stop hurting so much because of tight, sore muscles. Before long, I began to learn how yoga could contribute to improved performance in the weight room, on the tennis court, and at the running track. Eventually, I developed a desire to explore yoga and its history for its own sake. This could only come about because, at every stage, Ms. Abbott has shown great sensitivity to my individual goals, requirements, and level of understanding. Ms. Abbott brings outstanding professionalism to any project she undertakes. She has a solid commitment to continuing education.

I have worked with Melinda Abbott for almost 2 years. Throughout our time together we have worked on more traditional training techniques as well as Yoga. Melinda is extremely professional, and very experienced. Her knowledge and experience, coupled with her understanding of many forms of body movement and exercise only increase the value of her teaching abilities.
We have worked with different styles of Yoga, from strengthening to flexibility to movement to breathing. She is very aware of and is able to clearly express the important transitions from position to position. Progression of movement is thought through clearly and precisely. She is also easily able to make any adjustments that may be necessary based on injuries or difficulties with particular movements. She has a fine sense of what levels a person can handle and she can adapt to whatever is necessary. And yet, she is able to push the individual enough, but not too far.
Melinda is a true professional. Her attitude is very positive and realistic. She is also very understanding and has an open mind and great sense of humor.
I recommend Melinda completely without any hesitation.

I wandered into Melinda’s class at Equinox thinking Iit would be one of those “yoga lite” sort of class…boy was I wrong!! Melinda walked into the room and the whole class felt her presence. She is so calm and her voice so soothing that we immediately were in our practice. Her class is really challenging physically compassionate but tough, and her adjustments are so amazing. I learn something new about my practice every time I take her class. My only complaint is that her classes aren’t longer…could use more!!!!
